About Turkey tail:
If the name of this mushroom wasn't obvious enough, it very much looks like a turkey's tail. With bands of different colors ranging from white, light brown, dark brown, black, purple(ish) and sometimes even green on this fan shaped, polypore bracket fungus that grows in rosette-like clusters. The latin name for this mushroom is Coriolus versicolor, meaning "of several colors". This wide spread fungus can be found in most places around the world and can be identified in the wild with relative ease.
Turkey tail is the most researched and studied medicinal mushroom in western science for its potential as a complimentary treatment. This is because of two novel polysaccharides found in turkey tail know as polysaccharide peptide(PSP) and polysaccharide krestin (PSK) first found and isolated from mycelium cultures.
In Japan, Turkey tail is commonly used as an adjunctive treatment. Turkey tail has also become popular in recent years for its benefits on our gut-microbiomes.
Scientifically backed Benefits of Turkey tail:
-
-
Immune System Support
Trametes versicolor contains active compounds such as polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which enhance immune response. Clinical studies demonstrate that PSK and PSP stimulate immune cells like macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells, improving immune defense against infections and supporting overall immune health, particularly for people undergoing cancer treatment (Fukushima et al., 1986; Ooi & Liu, 2000). -
Adjunct Cancer Support
Turkey tail extract, especially PSK, has been extensively studied as an adjunct therapy in cancer treatment. Clinical trials have found that PSK can improve survival rates in patients with various cancers, such as gastric and colorectal cancer, when combined with chemotherapy. PSK is approved in Japan as an immunotherapeutic agent for cancer due to its effectiveness (Sakamoto et al., 2006; Oba et al., 2007). -
Antioxidant Activity
Trametes versicolor extract is rich in antioxidants, such as phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Antioxidant activity from these compounds helps protect cells from damage and contributes to overall health (Cui & Chisti, 2003; Zhao et al., 2004). -
Gut Health Benefits
Research shows that Trametes versicolor polysaccharides act as prebiotics, supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. In one study, supplementation with turkey tail extract increased levels of beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, which play an important role in maintaining gut health and improving immune function (Li et al., 2018). -
Potential Antiviral Properties
Preliminary studies indicate that turkey tail’s polysaccharides may stimulate the immune system to combat viral infections. For example, an in vitro study on Trametes versicolor found that its polysaccharides could enhance antiviral immune responses, which may be beneficial in managing viral infections, though more clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects (Hobbs, 1995). -
Improvement of Respiratory Health
Some studies have explored the effects of Trametes versicolor on respiratory health. Findings suggest that turkey tail may support respiratory function by modulating immune responses, particularly in individuals with compromised respiratory health (Yang et al., 1992).

When to take Turkey tail?
There is no right or wrong answer here, if you are not treating something and taking it as a daily dietary supplement then we would recommend taking it first thing in the morning with your cup of tea or coffee. Otherwise it can be taken throughout the day whenever you feel it's needed, or if you are like us and sometimes forget to take your morning Turkey tail dose, add it in with your Reishi in the evening to benefit from its restorative effects during a good night's rest.
