About Birch Polypore:

Birch Polypore is one of the mushrooms found on Otzi the iceman. The oldest preserved mummified iceman in the world found near the alps. He's older than even the pyramids and Stonehenge and carried only a few things with him. Things you would generally expect a man living in those times to carry. Most interestingly to us, is that he carried with him two dried fungi, the Hoof fungus and Birch polypore. Outside of the fact that these two mushrooms were found relatively often in the alps, the question remains, why did he carry them and what purpose did they serve? Our thoughts immediately go to the well known medicinal properties of these fungi, but could there already have been knowledge of such uses and benefits all the way back then? Perhaps the medicinal use of mushrooms far predates our current estimates. It is worth a mention that both of these fungi have uses outside their medicinal application. The flammability of the fibrous hoof fungus was used to carry embers for long distances during a time when the portability and access to fire meant the difference between life and death. The birch polypore was used as a styptic, knife sharpener and as a carrier of fire.  Since we have other tools for those purposes today, we can focus on using this mushroom for its known and sought after therapeutic and nutritional qualities.

When to Take Birch polypore:

We take Birch polypore daily to reap most of the benefits from it. Since this mushroom is a rare resource for us here in South Africa, we choose to keep some aside for times when we need to specifically treat certain infections
